The Crash Mode Protocols - The History of Strats (5)

Big Finds #5
Sink-Glitch

1st of all I wanted to mention that i write all of those protocols from my point-of-view, someone else might tell the story a little bit different.

I don't even know the exact number, but there are currently at least a handful of zones where the sink-glitch is working. But all started with Pacific Peril and without that traffic/zone setup there, the sink-glitch probably wouldn't have been discovered. It is a perfect example of a "by accident" find.

Back in late 2003 I didn't have a proper strat for a good truck-glitch-scenario. I was using a Hot Rod "bus-flipping" strat which gave me a top score over 40 million. Maco on Cyberscore had a 55 million score using Supercar. I always wondered how he did that. The best score on XBL was a 61 million score using Custom Roadster.
In summer 2004 someone on the IGN forums accused me of cheating after watching some of my videos with flying-truck-glitches. He seemed so convinced about. At that time it wasn't really clear for me, that flying-truck-glitches are not working on the Ps2 version cause that guy was playing on a Ps2. Some days later that same guy posted a 160 million score on Pacific Peril doing 22 million of damage! His cousin was over and got that score. I almost couldn't believe that massive damage he got. NotYourCarNYC asked him about the strat he was using and we copied it and soon also got scores beyond the 100 million mark.

This strat must have been found by many people by accident. Imagine someone new to the game playing on Pacific Peril, driving fast towards the traffic, missing some cars and in confusion crashing into the trailer of the truck making the car used flying into the tunnel.
In 2006, after seeing a video with a sink-glitch, maco wrote that that was what happened to him on the 55 million score, he just wasn't sure before what exactly happened.

4th PR from Crashfreak this year. On Freeway Fury/9 he got 445,7 million, but unfortunately it was only 0,1 million better than his old PR so he remains on 2nd place.
He also beat his own almost 1 year old best Gamecube 60hz vid (445,6mil).

  • Video Zone 9 - 445,7 million
  • Top 25 - Freeway Fury/9
  • July 14, 2018 - 15:05:48

3rd World Record within 5 days and another very old record got beaten! Crashfreak got 124,8 million on Avalanche/13 and beat the 12 years old WR from RedderBattle639 by 3,7 million (121,1mil). On the Top-25 he climbed 1 spot from 2nd onto 1st place (previous PR 119,5mil). It is currently the 9th WR he is holding and he is the 1st Crasher with an average position under 3.000.

  • Video Zone 13 - 124,8 million
  • Top 25 - Avalanche/13

The Crash Mode Protocols - The History of Strats (4)

    Big Finds #4
    Runaway Super Take-off Manual Transmission

The Runaway Super Take-off done with manual transmission (in short RST MT) is maybe not such a "Big Find" like the 3 ones already mentioned but it sure was another very good and important find. In 2008, after the RST was already known for some years, Wave was trying to do the RST with manual transmission (MT) and found, that it was faster than doing it with automatic transmission (AT). The reason is, that with manual transmission you could shift the gears much faster. With automatic transmission there was always a slowdown on the speed, cause the pace how AT shifted up gears could just not hold up with the enormous speed right at the take-off.

For example this made the Supercar-strat on Coastal Crush also doable on 60hz/NTSC and is nowadays for some Crashers the prefered hz-value to use there (due to more optimal physics to recreate the scenario). But it also opened the door to use 60hz on zones like Dam Buster or Ballistic Beach.
All in all this find added more opportunities.

Crashfreaks 1st PR in 2018 is also the 1st World Record this year. On Coastal Crush/2 he got 413,0 million and beat his own almost 9 months WR by 21 million (392,8mil)! He is the 1st one to beat the 400 million mark there and he also set another highest-damage-ever record for that zone with 22,9 million!
He also beat the 4 years old best Gamecube 60hz video from Anthony Burnout by 103 million (310,9mil).
On the Totals he is now only 4 million away to beat the 6,8 billion mark.

  • Video Zone 2 - 413,0 million
  • Top 25 - Coastal Crush/2
  • July 8, 2018 - 22:40:26

Brainkiller007 got his 2nd PR in 2018. On Cross Traffic Crash/26 he got 160,1 million and was missing the World Record (168,4mil) for 2 unluckily escaping multipliers. On the Top-25 he remains on 3rd place (previous PR 136,2mil). He also set a new highest-damage-ever record for that zone with 13,3 million.
On the Totals he is only 3 million away to beat the 6,6 billion mark.

  • Video Zone 26 - 160,1 million
  • Top 25 - Cross Traffic Crash/26

The Crash Mode Protocols - The History of Strats (3)

    Big Finds #3
    Late-Start

In 2013 DEADLY 1 uploaded a video for Dangerous Curve with a 70 million score where he started later and crashed, when the timer was almost over. This made the vehicles crashing much more powerful. I am not sure what made him trying starting later (which was by the way tried before for probably other reasons). But it looks like another find found by accident. Together with the Runaway Super Take-off and the Trailer-damage those are the 3 biggest overall-finds. It could be built into each zone, which allowed triggering the traffic later. You simply had to wait (at the start or some spot before triggering the traffic) and the more powerful crash was activated.

It turned out quickly, that this would be an enormous help especially for non-glitch zones/scores. For example on Hairpin Havoc it was hard and rare to get a score over 70 million. With the "late start" built into existing strats this mark got so much easier to beat and years old records were not much worth anymore. If you knew what to do and had practice with the strat and not some unlucky session, you could beat 70 million within like 10 minutes.
For "glitching" zones it already was a help, that you could get more damage before the actual glitch, like for example on Head On Highway. Or on a not-so-speedy traffic zone like Cross Traffic Crash, it already helped having faster traffic, which could help triggering the "flying-truck" glitch easier. But on some zones it didn't work out properly, cause it destroyed an already fine-worked-out scenario (Supercar-strat on Down Hill Demolition) or the crash was way too powerful and good scenarios didn't work out that good anymore (Tunnel-strat on Dip Disaster).

But there was also a downside which came with the late-start. For some reason vehicles escaped much easier. They could pass other vehicles when they weren't blocking their path. On Head On Highway for example sometimes crashes won't end with a 16 multiplier cause of that.
Also it is still not entirely known, when the late-start power is activated. For now, it is known if you crash when the timer is at 5 seconds and below, it is activated. But it was also noticed, when you crash at the 2-3 seconds mark and below, the vehicles will escape a little bit easier.
