The Crash Mode Protocols - The History of Strats (4)

    Big Finds #4
    Runaway Super Take-off Manual Transmission

The Runaway Super Take-off done with manual transmission (in short RST MT) is maybe not such a "Big Find" like the 3 ones already mentioned but it sure was another very good and important find. In 2008, after the RST was already known for some years, Wave was trying to do the RST with manual transmission (MT) and found, that it was faster than doing it with automatic transmission (AT). The reason is, that with manual transmission you could shift the gears much faster. With automatic transmission there was always a slowdown on the speed, cause the pace how AT shifted up gears could just not hold up with the enormous speed right at the take-off.

For example this made the Supercar-strat on Coastal Crush also doable on 60hz/NTSC and is nowadays for some Crashers the prefered hz-value to use there (due to more optimal physics to recreate the scenario). But it also opened the door to use 60hz on zones like Dam Buster or Ballistic Beach.
All in all this find added more opportunities.

Crashfreaks 1st PR in 2018 is also the 1st World Record this year. On Coastal Crush/2 he got 413,0 million and beat his own almost 9 months WR by 21 million (392,8mil)! He is the 1st one to beat the 400 million mark there and he also set another highest-damage-ever record for that zone with 22,9 million!
He also beat the 4 years old best Gamecube 60hz video from Anthony Burnout by 103 million (310,9mil).
On the Totals he is now only 4 million away to beat the 6,8 billion mark.

  • Video Zone 2 - 413,0 million
  • Top 25 - Coastal Crush/2
  • July 8, 2018 - 22:40:26

Brainkiller007 got his 2nd PR in 2018. On Cross Traffic Crash/26 he got 160,1 million and was missing the World Record (168,4mil) for 2 unluckily escaping multipliers. On the Top-25 he remains on 3rd place (previous PR 136,2mil). He also set a new highest-damage-ever record for that zone with 13,3 million.
On the Totals he is only 3 million away to beat the 6,6 billion mark.

  • Video Zone 26 - 160,1 million
  • Top 25 - Cross Traffic Crash/26

The Crash Mode Protocols - The History of Strats (3)

    Big Finds #3
    Late-Start

In 2013 DEADLY 1 uploaded a video for Dangerous Curve with a 70 million score where he started later and crashed, when the timer was almost over. This made the vehicles crashing much more powerful. I am not sure what made him trying starting later (which was by the way tried before for probably other reasons). But it looks like another find found by accident. Together with the Runaway Super Take-off and the Trailer-damage those are the 3 biggest overall-finds. It could be built into each zone, which allowed triggering the traffic later. You simply had to wait (at the start or some spot before triggering the traffic) and the more powerful crash was activated.

It turned out quickly, that this would be an enormous help especially for non-glitch zones/scores. For example on Hairpin Havoc it was hard and rare to get a score over 70 million. With the "late start" built into existing strats this mark got so much easier to beat and years old records were not much worth anymore. If you knew what to do and had practice with the strat and not some unlucky session, you could beat 70 million within like 10 minutes.
For "glitching" zones it already was a help, that you could get more damage before the actual glitch, like for example on Head On Highway. Or on a not-so-speedy traffic zone like Cross Traffic Crash, it already helped having faster traffic, which could help triggering the "flying-truck" glitch easier. But on some zones it didn't work out properly, cause it destroyed an already fine-worked-out scenario (Supercar-strat on Down Hill Demolition) or the crash was way too powerful and good scenarios didn't work out that good anymore (Tunnel-strat on Dip Disaster).

But there was also a downside which came with the late-start. For some reason vehicles escaped much easier. They could pass other vehicles when they weren't blocking their path. On Head On Highway for example sometimes crashes won't end with a 16 multiplier cause of that.
Also it is still not entirely known, when the late-start power is activated. For now, it is known if you crash when the timer is at 5 seconds and below, it is activated. But it was also noticed, when you crash at the 2-3 seconds mark and below, the vehicles will escape a little bit easier.

The Crash Mode Protocols - The History of Strats

    Big Finds #2
    Trailer-Damage

Welcome to the 2nd part, this time we talk about another "Big Find", the trailer-damage. Behind the Runaway Super Take-off this is probably the 2nd biggest overall-find, cause it also could have impact on alot of zones. The ones where a truck appears. It was found in 2016 and it explained some things and years old mysteries.

Crashfreak, who has a good eye for details and by the way is surely the most skilled Crasher I ever saw, discovered, that the front of a truck (cab) and trailers are separated for damage. He found that out by observing the helicopter-mode and saw, that the damage-display of a truck will sometimes plop-out above the cab, and sometimes above the trailer.
This means it is 2 parts which can take damage. But, for some unknown reason, only the one will count which is touched 1st. For example if a truck starts to brake (slide), it is only the cab which counts. But if the trailer is touched 1st by the car used or another vehicle, only the trailer will create damage. And, the trailer can take much more damage than the cab. This can help especially on a glitch.

This find lead to new strats and/or existing ones were rebuild into a trailer-strat. Like for example the wall-strat on Rattlesnake Row or the trailer-strat on Downtown Destruction. On both even the World Record got beaten cause of that.
But it also was an important find for knowledge and understanding of how crashes are working. It explained things and mysteries like for example trucks not taking any damage on sink-glitches. Because the trailer wasn't touched 1st. And why, for example, the 23-multi-strat on Freeway Fury gave that much damage but with just a truck being involved in the glitch. And it is the reason why the rail-strat on Avalanche is working and why that kicked trailer-truck on Coastal Crush is so imporant for a very big score.

Some time ago someone on Youtube asked how did i figure out strats on Crash Mode. I gave him a detailed reply for the strat on Downtown Destruction/22, as this was the video he asked on. After that I thought, it might be an interesting read and nice to have this as some kind of history/protocol, which could be build into the website sometime.
This is the link to my reply:

I thought, it might be a good idea to realese those protocols on the news. Would be also a little variety to the usual score/PR news. From time to time i will add new protocols. I will start today with a "Big find". We call it a "Big find", when it have impact for the whole Crash Mode, not just for a certain zone. Btw if you have a request for a zone/strat/etc. you are curious about, let me know on the comments or ask on the Skype group or Discord channel.

    Big Finds #1
    Runaway Super Take-off

The Runaway Super Take-off (in short RST) was discovered by Drew22werD (in 2003 i believe). He found it by accident when playing around with the buttons before the start. He is also the only person i know of, who discovered it by himself. This had an huge impact on alot of zones cause it gave alot of completely new possibilities for new strats.
Some might call it cheating, cause you need to activate the Runaway "cheat" on the cheat menu. But i don't see it as a usual cheat. With every other cheat activated it won't save your score on your profile so you couldn't upload them on the official Burnout 2 Xbox Live scoreboards. But scores done with the Runaway "cheat" were saved and you could upload them to the official Xbox Live scoreboards. Now ask yourself, why would they build that feature into?

    My personal opinion:
This is probably the biggest overall-find in Crash Mode. I remember back then in 2005 when Drew told me about the RST. When i tried it for the 1st time i was completely amazed about that find and how fast that take-off is. Man, this was big, it changed the whole Crash Mode for me. Alot of strats i was using back then i never used again cause they got useless instantly.

LEEK701X got 88,6 million on Dam Buster/14 and entered the Top-25 on 17th place (previous PR 18mil).
On the Overall Rankings he climbed from #22 onto #19 and on the Totals he beat the 2,9 billion mark.

  • Video Zone 14 - 88,6 million
