The Crash Mode Protocols - The History of Crash and Strats (Episode 9)

    Freeze Scores Mystery

I had a conversation this week about freeze scores and i wanted to share those thoughts before they get lost in the depths of messenger history. And it is also a explanation for people which are not very familiar with freeze scores and what they mean.

Basically a freeze "score" is just when the game freezes like it happens on a lot of other games. The screen freezes and you can't continue and have to restart the game. This also happens with Burnout 2, especially with the Xbox version. But it's still a very rare thing to happen and it looks like the black helicopter replays have something to do with it. "Black heli replays" start to occur after some time on the same zone. The screen goes black after each crash during the helicopter-mode but you still can hear the audio. That is why people restart a zone from the menu after some time to fix this and prevent those freezes to happen.
Now to get that rare freeze just happening during an also rare big glitch is just a very very unlucky occasion. Now imagine it happening on a score which would have been a World Record, even one where the score is much bigger than any other score done before. This already happened 4 times to the same two people.
Now no ones really knows if the game just froze. Why would it happen just on so big scores if they are that rare. There is a theory that maybe the counter even glitched or something, and was showing way too high numbers, or something else is wrong. Now let's take a look onto those scores and the zones it happened on and if those scores are possible/can be seen from nowadays experiences/knowledge.

The 1st big freeze score happened already in 2005 on the famous Out of Control Tower zone. Drew22werDs game froze right after a glitch with 51,5 million damage (x18 multi = 927 million). This was at that time about 18 million bigger than the best known damage before (33,7 million also by Drew22werD). He used the "Custom Muscle RST" strat and described the scenario with the Oil Tanker being folded at those 2 parked trucks surrounded by 5 or 6 buses. It's known that a perfect positioned bus (or truck) can take an enormous damage right at the glitch but it has to be a perfect scenario together with the glitching truck. An example is the 720 million glitch on the same zone. It is estimated that that one bus went for about 10-15 million damage. So it probably is possible to get like 3-4 buses going for 10 million damage. Also since trailer-damage was discovered, it is known that a kicked trailer can also go for very high damage. In this case that would be those 2 parked trucks (which were touched at the trailer 1st). Now almost 15 years later the highest known damage being 38,6 million, is still a good amount away from 51,5 million. But you have to count in, that since that, almost all people used a different strat (Supercar RST). Maybe you have to go with that "Custom Muscle" strat (and i guess Xbox 60hz to recreate that same scenario easier) to get something like that again and prove that a damage that high is possible. But even without that proof i would say that damage is sure possible. That 927 million score would be still a World Record today.

The 2nd big freeze score was done on Surf Shocker/21 by Redderbattle639 with a 309 million score. And another time it was a huge score being 3 times as a big as the previous World Record, which was 104 million at that time. The reason is, that he got a big glitch with busspinners which never, before and after, happened to anyone again. Without any experience with other glitches on that zone, it is hard to tell, that that score isn't possible. Some people think it is way too high, cause there is like no time with that strat to build up a damage that high. But then again like already mentioned on that freeze on the Out of Control Tower zone, under perfect conditions it may be possible to get like an instant 21 million of damage. There are 4 buses and there is a fence on the right, where a bus could be squashed into and create an instantly high damage on a perfect scenario. But then again it is hard to tell cause no one has experience with glitches on that zone. I only know, if RedderBattle639 saw spinning buses there, nevermind if the score may be a glitched counter one or something else is wrong, he still would have the World Record today cause no on else was able to achieve a big glitch on that zone.

The 3rd big freeze score happened on Down Hill Demolition and another time it was done by Drew22werD. He got a 25 million damage glitch resulting in a 536 million score, which at that time would have been a World Record (311 million was the previous one). Unfortunately that freeze just happened, when he left the room to get a soda (for people not being that familiar with Crash Mode and glitches and all that stuff, this is quite common for whoever knows what reason, that people get really high scores or even PRs and WRs, when just not watching on the screen or being busy with something else or even leaving the room), and cause of that, it even seems a bigger mystery with that 25 million damage. At that time he got that score "trailer-damage" still wasn't discovered. The strat Drew22werD was using (Custom Pickup strat with 3 trucks) isn't a trailer one. People tried also the similar "Custom Pickup non-glitch" strat and no one ever got over 8 million of damage. Even if he got a truck flying into the parked buses I somehow can't see 25 million damage happening without "trailer-damage". Or i am missing something? It would have been very interesting to know what happend on that glitch to get more answers. But with the knowledge of "trailer-damage" this 25 million damage seems like a mystery.

The 4th and last big freeze score happened to RedderBattle639 on the Double Back Damage zone. Using a new wall-strat back then he got a gigantic 72 million damage glitch (x9 multi = 654 million), which is the biggest damage ever happening on Crash Mode (without the sink-glitch). Currently the best known damage is 44 million on Freeway Fury. As he came up with a new strat no one had experience with wall-glitches and scores there. 1 year later another wall-strat was found with a higher multiplier, which is used nowadays by almost everyone. But to this day no one was able to get over 22 million of damage using that strat. Reasons are that that wall-strat is very hard to recreate, so a lot of people get dismotivated easily. Another reason is, that it is hard to get a very good glitch for some reason, maybe the crash is too powerful to trigger a big one "easily". So no one really knows what damage is possible if you get a very big glitch like it happened on almost each other zone. That makes it hard to tell if 72 million of damage is doable. But for almost all people it seems a good way too big, also the scenario RedderBattle639 described didn't sound like a perfect positioned vehicles scenario to get a big damage from. He described the damage jumping to 65 million right at the glitch and then raising to 72 million till the end of crash. Sounds very legit and not like some counter glitch showing wrong numbers or something.

No one can tell for sure if there is something wrong with those mentioned freeze scores. Unfortunately there is also no video of one of those scores, only a black screen picture showing the damage counter and multiplier. For that reason it was decided to not include those scores on the rankings, there is just an info under each chart about those scores. I somehow hope something like that happens again but then with a recorded video, this could maybe answer some questions.

Seems the PR train is starting to roll, at least for CoastalCrusher. He got 125,8 million on Surf Shocker/21 and climbed from 6th onto 3rd place being only 3,4 million away from the World Record (previous PR 106,6mil). It is currently his 4th Top-3 spot.

It is a slow start into the new year but last year it was the same. I am excited to see how this year will do for Crash Mode. Since years i thought it will slow down a lot, but at the end of the year there were always many new scores, PRs and even World Records. So let's see what will happen this time, happy crashing and news reading to everyone.

The Crash Mode Protocols - The History of Strats (8)

    Big Finds #8
    Version Differences

I thought of what could i write in the next episode, cause i already mentioned all the "big" overall finds. Those protocols started with the idea to tell how things were discovored. But you can also see it as a list of which things have been discovered. So in this episode i will write/explain about the version differences.

In the 1st years 1-2 years the things, i mostly read on the internet was, that the Playstation 2 version doesn't glitch. And that the Gamecube version/50hz mode (the one i used back then) might be better for glitches. And yes, on the Playstation 2 version the "flying-truck" glitch isnt't working but the "sink"- and even the "flat-position" glitches are working. But that the Gamecube or the 50hz version is in general better for glitches/scores is not true or proven. There are even very high ranked players who even think, that the Xbox 60hz version is the best one for glitches. It is hard to tell what exactly is the best version in general, cause in Crash Mode you have to go from zone to zone, from strat to strat, compare, and then see which version works the best for a reason or might have advantages. Those are sometimes bigger difference and sometimes smaller ones.

So when did it exactly started when i knew about differences for Gamecube and Xbox and 50 and 60hz. I believe it was in 2005 after Drew22werD told me about RST. I found a strat on the Coastal Crush zone and after Drew22werD saw my video, he said my version is faster (cause of the bigger jump at the small bump after the start). Also cause he couldn't recreate the strat using 60hz cause he was to slow to reach the truck in time. So it was found that 50hz changes some things compared to 60hz, probably just another "glitch" in the game.

All in all it feels like things are more loosen up with the 50hz mode. The RST ist faster, the physics are lighter (buses are easier to flip for example) and also the handling changes. It is like each car has a worse handling compared to 60hz. On zones with changing traffic it can trigger different traffic compared to 60hz and also the timing changes (60hz is faster compared to 50hz). Oh yes, it just came to my mind that on the racing mode they knew very early that 60hz might be faster/better and that is why. Your car has a better handling + the timing/speed changes using 60hz. An idea i recently thought of, maybe on those courses where it is better to use the Custom Roadster try Supercar and the 50hz mode, it might work better.
But also the Xbox version is different compared to the Gamecube version but it is mainly the physics there, which are lighter using the Xbox version (buses flip easier for example, a vehicle is pushed farther when crashing into). Also the "traffic changing" changes. This means on zones with changing traffic it can happen that you have to do different things compared to Gamecube to get a certain traffic (trucks for example).

Mainly in the last years it was tested which version works the best for a certain strat/zone and sometimes it is just details why a version is prefered. Which can make it easier to trigger a good score/glitch/scenario. But this can change from zone to zone and from strat to strat so that it is impossible to say a version is better in general. Also the lucky factor of the game can make it hard to compare things. For example a certain version can be viewed as working better on Gamecube using 50hz and then someone comes around and gets the high score using Xbox and 60hz.

I will soon move on to the zones/strats with the protocols and explain there more about the version differences/details for each zone and strat. See you soon.

    November 22, 2018 - 09:14:19

For the 4th time within the last 3 weeks CoastalCrusher improves his PR on Catch Up Chaos/24 with the new Trailer-strat. He got 251,2 million (previous PR 236,1mil) and climbed another spot from 7th onto 6th place. Slowly getting there.
On the Totals he beat the 5,5 billion mark.

  • Video Zone 24 - 251,2 million
  • Top 25 - Catch Up Chaos/24
  • November 20, 2018 - 18:22:36

LEEK701Xs 14th PR within the last 16 days. And another time it was done on Freeway Fury/9 where he got 356,4 million climbing from 14th onto 10th place (previous PR 330,8mil).

  • Video Zone 9 - 356,4 million
  • Top 25 - Freeway Fury/9

  • Also Brainkiller007 improved his Long Distance Destruction/16 PR another time this month and got 117,8 million. But unfortunately it was again only 0,2 million better than his previous PR and no position change (10th/117,6mil).

  • Video Zone 16 - 117,8 million
  • Top 25 - Long Distance Destruction/16
  • November 18, 2018 - 21:48:16

The 2nd best thing which can happen after getting a World Record is to beat the highest score on video. And that accomplished Crashfreak today. On Glass Canyon/12 he got 142,0 million and beat the 2 years old best video (also done by him) by 0,8 million only. On the Top-25 he remains on the 2nd spot (previous PR 141,2mil).

  • Video Zone 12 - 142,0 million
  • Top 25 - Glass Canyon/12

  • Also LEEK701X got another PR today. On Freeway Fury/9 he got 330,8 million and climbed from 20th onto 14th place (previous PR 255,2mil).
On the Totals he beat the 4,4 billion mark.
He also beat the best Xbox 50hz video for that zone, which was done by Brainkiller007 over 11,5 years ago (303,5mil).

  • Video Zone 9 - 330,8 million
  • Top 25 - Freeway Fury/9

  • And cause we are just on the best Xbox 50hz videos. I oversaw that another one was beaten just some days ago so i didn't mention it on the news. It was MR Benga92s 126,0 million score on Twilight Turmoil/25 where he beat the 8,5 years old best video by 0,1 million only (125,9mil/Brainkiller007).
